Education In Times Of COVID-19
By Marcio Matamoros, Education Coordinator
The Covid-19 Pandemic, although it sounds paradoxical, has also been an opportunity to make strategic changes. We must think that every crisis has a solution, an expiration date, a life changing experience. At Por Los Niños Bilingual school we have learned to be a lot more organized, punctual, tolerant, and even miss the noisy school environment. We had to make immediate changes and adjustments, urgent alternatives for educational continuity, and seek for the best options as an educational institution, which led to challenges and essential changes to continue giving education to our students.
This in turn led us to be innovative, looking for answers, finding what was necessary and at hand, balancing teaching, and not leaving our children in intellectual helplessness. The immediate updating and establishment of educational platforms made us see the light in the midst of the crisis. It is also important to mention the essential bond between parents and children, even though in our environment most parents do not have the management of technological devices as their main skill; however, they do their best. Home schooling was not in our vocabulary, nor even in our minds.
Teachers assumed their responsibility and showed their true potential, empowering themselves, and giving their best. They showed they could do it, even without having taken a "Workshop on Educational Contingency in Cases of Pandemics". This shows us that the human being in the midst of a crisis is endowed with competencies that have not yet been fully explored, drawing out that creative, proactive, positivity, and humanity potential.
In Romans 12: 2, Paul tells us: "Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is- his good, pleasing, and perfect will" (NIV). Let us update, expand, and renew our knowledge, and open our mind to new ideas. Would it be possible to erase everything that happened in a moment and just say that this is in the past? Can we repeat the previous practices, without taking advantage of the moment of crisis to review and learn from the lessons lived at this time? Is it possible that we are going to miss the opportunity to make the innovative changes that are necessary and important for our kids? As men and women in transformation, the main objective of our children's education is equipping them, making them capable of doing new things, becoming a creative, inventive discoverer, being critics, and being able to verify and not simply accept everything that is offered.
Since last year, some of our student’s parents lost their jobs, closed their small business and others were victims of this virus, Almost one and a half million students were not able to register for the 2021 school year, but the PLN school keeps on facilitating scholarship opportunities for these families and helping them through this economy.
Please participate with us in our efforts to do different and better things. Pray that we can continue to be a light in the midst of the darkness of ignorance.
