4/16/13 - In March a work team comprised of people from Alabama, Mississippi & Texas traveled as a work team to Por Los Niños. The team had medical professionals, dental professionals, teachers, painters and those who would do what ever was needed. This was a very successful group in many ways, but the “highlight” of the trip was a young team member from Cullman, Alabama putting on our Lord and Savior in Baptism. Young Addie Echols was Baptized by her father Jonathan Echols. The whole team was blessed to be there and celebrate with Addie’s parents, Grandparents, Aunt, Uncle and a host of loving friends. A trip to PLN is a trip to remember in many ways. If you are interested in putting a team together or being part of a team being planned, please let us know. |

4/3/13 - Family Life Missions is in the middle of preparing a shipment of supplies to Por Los Ninos. This is always a major undertaking both physically and mentally. Supplies have to be sorted, weighed, measured, inventoried and placed on pallets before we can apply for shipment. Childhaven, a Church of Christ sponsored children's in Cullman, Alabama had a visiting work team. They are part of a national group organization known as "Sojourners". This team of volunteers is made up of "Retired" couples who have dedicated their retirement years to helping others. They travel all across the nation performing varied work to improve the lives of the less fortunate. Dr Jim Wright, Executive Director of Childhaven "shared" this team of volunteers with Family Life Missions. This much appreciated group help prepare a large portion of the PLN shipment. They were instrumental in preparing 19 pallets in excess of 5 feet high each. This is close to 500 boxes of shoes, clothes, books, personal hygiene items, cooking utensils, furniture and much more. Please join me in "Thanking" these wonderful people. |

3/25/13 - Graduation day is really big at the Por Los Ninos school in Honduras. This is a major milestone in the life of a young person in Honduras. Most Honduran young people never have a chance to get to the sixth grade. Yet, these students are graduating from the sixth grade and preparing to move forward with their education. This is only possible because of Christians who are following God's teaching.
The graduating students are honored in many special ways. Decorations adorn the school creating a festive atmosphere. The students hear words of encouragement from teachers and special guest acknowledging their accomplishment. It's an opportunity to reinforce with them that an education is the key to a better life for them and their families. A special meal is held in their honor complete with a traditional favorite, "Tres leche" cake.
Please join me in congratulating these Por Los Ninos children on achieving this goal. Please continue to pray for this work and others like it around the world. Your love and generosity has given them this opportunity. |

Sprucing up around the PLN village |
|
|
|
|
A number of projects around the village have been started, mostly repairs and routine maintenance. Many of these have been on the FLM/PLN calendar just waiting on funds to make them happen. In the past many needs around the village would go undone until someone in charge gave instructions to do it. It was the desire of Family Life Missions to "empower" the staff at PLN and help these adults grow individually. This endeavor continues to mature and bear fruit. Now many projects/repairs that need doing are being done by Jorge and the house parents. Pictures don't lie, it's not just the house parents, but the children are taking responsibility and getting things done. These girls wanted to "Spruce up" around the village. |
Many projects have been on FLM's radar for a long time, but one of the most desperate is increasing the security of the village. A compromise of the desired and the affordable was reached. Money is still a major factor, but working with Jorge it was determined the installation would be done by the house Dads and older children. It was determined FLM could do a section a month. |

Yes, the tractor was broken, again |
|
|
|
Jorge showed me the tractor and I saw major problems that appeared to be beyond repair. The center of a front rim was totally ripped apart & a heavy steel support was broken in two pieces. Jorge had tried to find replacement parts, but none were available, anywhere. It appeared as though we would be forced to order parts from the states and that would take a lot of time and money. The village uses the tractor often and it had to be repaired. I wanted Noe to weld the parts knowing Greg Wolf had giving him welding lessons. Noe wasn't confident he could do it and Jorge said he knew a welder and called him. That afternoon when the welder arrived, I explained through an interpreter what I thought would work. To my surprise he said "OK".

In 1996, a medical team discovered Emelina abandoned by her parents and near death in a remote mountain village. She was taken to a hospital in Juticalpa. Once she regained her health she to came to live at Por Los Niños.
I challenged Emelina to be the example for others at PLN by studying hard and working to help with her education. She accepted the challenge and works helping pay her tuition expenses at the University where she studies law. Emelina is scheduled to begin her "Internship" this June. It consist of 3 months with a family practice law firm and 3 months at a law firm working with the Honduran government. Upon completion she will be ready to practice law in Honduras. Emelina studies hard, works and helps around the village setting the bar as a wonderful role model for everyone at PLN. |

Dr. Mike and Dr. Darlene Rivas |
|
|
|
|
Family Life Missions has been blessed in many ways over the years. One of these blessings is leadership.
This year brought sadness to all involved with Family Life Missions/Por Los Niños with the retirement of Harry Hodges from the Board. Harry and Sara, his wife, have given of themselves for many years. Even in retirement, they still serve as a critical liaison for the FLM office. Replacing a Director in a volunteer position creates a challenge, especially when it requires so much time and resources.
Again our Lord has blessed Family Life Missions. Meet Dr. Mike G. Rivas, the newest member of the Family Life Missions Board of Directors. Mike and his wife, Dr. Darlene Rivas, both have a love for this ministry and have been involved with the work at PLN for many years. Mike and Darlene make their home in Agoura Hills, California where both are University professors. He teaches at the University of California at Santa Barbara, while Darlene teaches at Pepperdine University. Mike has been an Elder at Conejo Valley Church of Christ since 2009.

9/10/12 - The "Coin Bank" campaign is an important part of the Por Los Ninos annual fund raising efforts. We are blessed with loving and generous Christians who give so much to help these children.
Even though each participating group sets their own dates for the campaign we have been asked to send a reminder. It is very important to the success of this effort to encourage everyone in your congregation or group to join in and also contact potential participants about this needy cause. This is a vital work and these campaigns help Por Los Ninos meet financial obligations.
Coin banks are easy to obtain by simply contacting us to make your request. Help us get your banks to you promptly by simply giving us:
- Name of the key person who will manage the campaign and their contact information
- Number of banks needed and address where they should be mailed
We will gladly send the banks and all appropriate information to ensure a successful campaign.
Thank you in advance for any help you can give this ministry and please keep Por Los Ninos in your prayers.

Cullman Church of Christ has kicked off their "Coin Bank Campaign".Take a look at the beautiful & informative display that members at Cullman put together. It has really gotten the attention of the congregation. I was told more Coin Banks have been checked out than anyone could remember since Cullman has been helping PLN. They are using the latest Por Los Ninos video to enhance the appearance and information provided at the display. New child sponsors have joined the support of PLN and a lot of interest in visiting PLN has been the buzz.
Please share pictures of your coin can kick off with the rest of us. If you're not familiar or have questions about the Coin Banks please see our Coin Bank page or contact us. |
7/12/12 - Meet PLN's newest house parents, Noe & Keydi. Yes they look familiar because they both grew up at Por Los Niños.
They've since married and have a young son, Adam. Noe worked at a local building supply and proved to be a key employee and hard worker. Keydi worked in retail at a furniture store in Catacamas and is a very dedicated mother. They both have proved to be self-reliant and hard working Christians.
Everyone at PLN is very excited at Noe & Keydi's willingness to return to the PLN village and help nurture the next generation of self supporting Honduran Christians. |
